History of Visser Shipping

Orion
Visser Shipping was incorporated by Aleida and Douwe Visser in 1985. They both have their roots in typical Frisian shipping families. On their first inland waterway vessel, De Orion, they provided freight transport through the Netherlands and Germany.

The shipping company
In 1995 they changed course from inland navigation to marine navigation and bought their first seagoing vessel, followed by their first container ship in 2002. Aleida took up residence onshore with the children and has since been responsible for the organisational and administrative duties of Visser Shipping, working from the office in Sneek. Douwe Visser continued to work full-time as a captain. The fleet provides container transport throughout the Northwest of Europe.

Growth during the crisis years
Thanks to inventive entrepreneurship, the shipping company continued to enjoy growth during the crisis years. The fleet now consists of five modern container ships.

Shipping as a passion
If shipping is your profession, it better be your passion too. This certainly applies to Douwe Visser, as shipping runs in his blood. From as early as 15, he was part of a crew in the famous skûtsjesilen (typical Frisian sailing in special shallow-draught vessels) and to date he is skipper of the Grouster skûtsje vessel.
