Since 2005, he has been the skipper of the <em>Grouster sk\u00fbtsje<\/em>.<\/p><p><strong>The <em>Sk\u00fbtsjesilen<\/em> career of Douwe Visser<br \/><\/strong>Douwe has been active in <em>sk\u00fbtsjesilen<\/em> since he was 15 years old. From 1978 to 2001, he was a crew member of the <em>Sneker Pan.<\/em> With this crew, he won the title in 1984, 1995 and 1996. Subsequently, he was skipper of the <em>Drachtser sk\u00fbtsje <\/em>from 2002 to 2004. From 2005 to date, he has been the skipper of <em>Grouster sk\u00fbtsje<\/em>. For this, the vessels had to manoeuvre in shallow waters. Hence the ships were made long and flat.<\/p><p><strong>A\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Competitive\u00a0<em>sk\u00fbtsje<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>Many authentic\u00a0<em>sk\u00fbtsjes<\/em>\u00a0(flatboats) have now been adjusted for competitive sailing. For example, the competitive\u00a0<em>sk\u00fbtsjes<\/em>\u00a0are equipped with, on average, 160 square metres of sail and the vessels have been extended to positively influence hull speed. These adjustments are subject to certain rules. This is to ensure a level playing field for every ship.
